Mighty Tip

Tempeh is a plant protein source made primarily from fermented soybeans and is known for its high protein content!

All the sweet and savory goodness of maple flavored bacon BUT it’s made with tempeh! It boasts 18 grams of protein per serving and 6 grams of fiber! This recipe requires ONLY four ingredients — so it is a great, simple substitute for bacon! The tempeh bacon recipe is vegan and vegetarian. It goes great on a bagel for a vegetarian breakfast sandwich!

While the tempeh recipe itself is VEGAN, note that adding an egg to the breakfast sandwich will mean the sandwich pictured here is not vegan!

INGREDIENTS

  • Block of tempeh

  • 1-2 tbsp olive oil (start with 1 and add as needed)

  • 2 tbsp coconut aminos OR soy sauce

    • Using coconut aminos cuts that sodium that soy sauce contains. It has a slightly sweeter flavor that soy sauce does.

  • 2-3 tbsp maple syrup

DIRECTIONS

  1. Cut the tempeh into thin 1/4 inch slices.

  2. Cook both sides in the olive oil over medium heat until both sides are brown. Usually about two minutes on the first side then flip over the other side.

  3. Add coconut aminos (or soy sauce) and maple syrup to the pan and stir around. Lower heat to a simmer.

  4. Can let the tempeh cook a bit longer (2-4 minutes) in the coconut aminos and maple syrup, flipping occasionally.

  5. Remove from heat and enjoy!
